Thoughtful answers
to honest questions.
Starting something new can bring uncertainty. These responses are offered to help you feel informed, reassured, and welcomed — whatever your background, beliefs, or needs may be.
What is Reiki?
Reiki is a gentle Japanese healing-touch modality that originated in the early twentieth century. It is most commonly received as a way to encourage deep relaxation, nervous system support, emotional ease, and restorative care. During a session, the practitioner places their hands lightly on or just above the body, allowing energy to flow in a calm, non-invasive manner.
Clients remain fully clothed throughout the session. The touch is light and respectful, and hands-off approaches are always available for those who prefer not to be touched directly. Reiki is offered as complementary wellness support — a space to slow down and receive care — and does not replace medical or psychological treatment.
What does a session feel like?
Sessions feel different for everyone, and that is exactly as it should be. Many people experience a sense of deep relaxation, warmth, or gentle tingling. Some feel emotions rise and then soften. Others simply notice that their breathing slows and their thoughts grow quieter.
It is common to drift between wakefulness and a restful, dreamlike state. Some clients feel profoundly calm; others feel subtly shifted. There is no right or wrong way to experience a session. What matters is that you are held in a space where your nervous system can settle at its own pace.
Is Reiki safe?
Reiki is considered a very gentle, non-invasive modality and is widely regarded as safe for people of many ages and life stages. Because it involves only light touch or no touch at all, and because clients remain fully clothed, there is little physical risk involved.
Reiki can be supportive for expecting mothers, older adults, individuals navigating illness or recovery, highly sensitive people, children and teens with parent or guardian support, and individuals with disabilities or special needs. Sessions are always adapted to the comfort and capacity of the person receiving care.
Reiki is not a substitute for medical care. If you have specific health concerns, please consult your healthcare provider.
Do I need to be spiritual to receive Reiki?
Not at all. Clients come from every kind of background — some deeply spiritual, others firmly practical, and many somewhere in between. Reiki can be approached as a contemplative practice, a spiritual experience, or simply as a form of restorative body-centered support. There is no belief system required, no ritual to adopt, and no pressure to interpret your session in any particular way.
The care offered here is respectful of whatever framework you bring with you. Whether you are spiritually curious, analytically minded, or simply exhausted and looking for rest, you are welcome exactly as you are.
Can Reiki support chronic stress or chronic illness?
Many people seek Reiki during periods of chronic stress, burnout, nervous system overwhelm, autoimmune illness, chronic pain, caregiving exhaustion, grief, recovery, and emotional depletion. While Reiki is not a cure and does not replace medical care, it can offer a space where the body and mind are invited to rest deeply, often for the first time in a long while.
A great deal of the work here is informed by lived experience with lupus, Ehlers-Danlos syndrome, nervous system dysregulation, and the slow, nonlinear process of restorative pacing. That understanding shapes how sessions are held — with patience, flexibility, and no expectation that rest must look a certain way.
Many clients use Reiki alongside conventional healthcare as a complementary form of support. It is a place to be cared for while you navigate the complexity of your own path.
Do you offer distance Reiki?
Yes. Distance Reiki sessions are offered with the same care, pacing, and attentiveness as in-person work. Clients typically receive the session while resting comfortably at home — on a sofa, in bed, or wherever they feel most at ease. The session includes a brief guided meditation to help settle the nervous system, followed by the full Reiki treatment, and space afterward to reorient gently.
Do you offer in-home sessions?
Limited in-home sessions are available within the San Diego area, particularly for clients who may find travel difficult. These sessions are especially supportive for individuals navigating illness recovery, mobility limitations, caregiving strain, hospice or palliative care, and end-of-life transitions. The same calm, unhurried pace is brought into the familiarity of your own environment.
Do you offer animal Reiki?
Yes. Animal Reiki is offered as both a distance session and, on select travel days within San Diego, as an in-home visit. Sessions are gentle and always led by the animal's comfort and pacing. The caregiver is welcome to stay nearby, and the session is adjusted continuously to honor what the animal needs in each moment.
Are you insured?
White Lily Reiki operates as a fully insured professional practice serving San Diego.
Do you accept HSA or FSA payments?
HSA and FSA eligibility varies depending on your individual provider and plan. Some clients may be able to use HSA or FSA funds for Reiki sessions with appropriate documentation of medical necessity from a licensed healthcare provider.
Clients are encouraged to verify eligibility directly with their plan administrator before booking. White Lily Reiki cannot guarantee reimbursement or provide tax or legal advice.
What should I wear or bring?
Comfortable clothing is recommended, and you will remain fully clothed throughout the session. No special preparation is necessary — you are welcome to arrive exactly as you are.
If you have not eaten recently, a light snack of protein beforehand can help you feel grounded and comfortable. Plant or animal protein — whatever suits your body — is perfectly fine.
Some clients like to bring a journal to write down reflections, sensations, or observations afterward, though this is entirely optional. There is no need to "do Reiki correctly" or prepare in any special way. Your only task is to show up and allow yourself to be cared for.
"However you arrive is exactly the right way to arrive."
